The American Film Institute is the preeminent organization dedicated to advancing and preserving the art of film, television and other forms of the moving image. AFI provides film preservation, leadership training and explores new digital technologies in movie making.
Since 1967, AFI has trained the next generation of leading filmmakers at its world-renowned Conservatory. The Conservatory awards the Master of Fine Arts in Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Producing, Production Design and Screenwriting.
Although provided with a grant from AFI, Conservatory Fellows are dependent on friends, family and the business community to produce quality thesis projects. Upon completion of each production, AFI hosts a series of screenings in Los Angeles and works to distribute the project both domestically and abroad.
AFI Thesis productions have garnered numerous awards including several Oscar nominations, the Student Oscars, Directors Guild of America award, Society of Cinematographers (ASC) awards and tops honors from the American Cinema Editors (ACE).
